Since the 1880’s when Broome developed into a bustling pearling port, Broome’s Chinese community has remained active and culturally strong. However, their contribution to Broome has largely been unacknowledged. Theirs is a story of struggle, hardship and prejudice and reveals the opportunism of the White Australia policies of the new Australian federation. But it is also a story of overcoming the prejudices that existed in this colonial town, of partnership with the local indigenous people and becoming an integral part of the Broome community.
